2008 Report to the Community Mission Statement
The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers, guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
The Red Cross in Our Community

Disaster Relief and Community Disaster Education
When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross is there. This year we responded to 179 local disasters. We helped 562 individuals with emergency food, shelter and supplies. Volunteers supported 626 emergency responders as they coped with emergencies such as wildfires.
Because being prepared can make your family and community safer and sometimes minimize injury and destruction, we reached 10,797 individuals with disaster education presentations across the area.
Activated during large national disasters, volunteers staffed our call center to provide referral and other information to those affected by disaster.
Health and Safety Services
From first aid, CPR and AED training to swimming, lifeguarding, and babysitting, American Red Cross programs help people lead safer and healthier lives. This year 31,441 individuals learned lifesaving skills through classes and presentations offered by our chapter.
International Services
The international tracing program helps local families find relatives with whom they have lost contact because of a natural disaster, war or internal conflict. Two individuals and their families were assisted this year.
Armed Forces Emergency Services
The American Red Cross provides communication between those in the Armed Forces and their families. We have a worldwide network that reaches service members wherever they are to communicate a birth, death or illness. This year we provided emergency connections for 4331 military families. On Veteran's Day our volunteers delivered thank you gifts to 512 veterans in nursing homes throughout the area. Additional services were provided to veterans at Mountain Home VA Medical Center.
Community Services
Our volunteers staffing school clinics assisted over 2,668 students. Another 2,038 people participated in health screenings or were reached through other community programs. Financial assistance was provided to 152 families in need of emergency dental care, medicines or rent/mortgage help due to a family emergency. Referrals to other agencies were given to 1,107 individuals.
A Note About Volunteers
We depend on volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to carry on our work. Volunteers constitute 98 percent of our total workforce, serving as members of the board, instructors teaching lifesaving skills, disaster action team members, office administrators, event organizers and more.
This year, 578 volunteers, 12 employees, and the financial contributions of hundreds made the work of the American Red Cross of Northeast Tennessee possible.
