Grilling Safety Tips Labor Day is often a time for family and friends to plan outdoor cooking. Do you keep safety in mind when grilling? Below are a few tips from the Red Cross to make your meal a safe one! Enjoy! - Keep children at a safe distance from the grill.
- Wear close fitting clothing - no long wide sleeves, flapping aprons or skirts.
- Remove all flammable materials - lighting fluid, hot pads, etc from the grill area.
- Have a bucket of sand or the lid to the grill handy to smother flames. When grease is involved in a fire, dousing with water can spread the grease making the fire worse.
- Be sure the fire is out or safely covered with you leave the grill. Turn off the gas or butane with you finish grilling.
- Dispose of used charcoal in a container that will not burn such as a metal trash can.
- Be sure there is nothing hanging over your grill like a tree branch or house eave.
- Light charcoal with an approved lighting method such as a starter stick. Never use gasoline.
- Keep all flammable liquids away from smoldering fire.
- Always store gas or proplne grills outside in a cool shady location out of direct sunlight. Do not store inside a house or garage where fumes could accumulate or near heat sources like a water heater.
- Make sure hoses and fittings on your gril are tight and secure.
- Make sure grease does not drip on hoses, fittings, or flammable surfaces.
- Keep power tools with gasoline engines away from grills when cooking.
